Alas it seems that for once a transfer rumour has come to fruition. After a fair bit of speculation on Rovers message-boards in the last couple of days it has indeed come to pass and Richie Wellens is a Rovers player no more.
A fee of £1.2million and no doubt sizable wages too are what it took to take Wellens from Rovers to Leicester City today. It is the highest fee ever paid for a Rovers player, and the most the club have received in a transfer payment since Rufus Brevett joined Queens Park Rangers eighteen years ago.
Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield Wellens offered your typical footballer on the move sound-bites; “I’m pleased it’s gone through but it took quite a while. I wasn’t looking to leave, but as soon as I heard a club like Leicester were willing to pay the money Doncaster wanted I went down and spoke to them, and couldn’t really say no to be honest. They’re a big club with a big fan base and they want to get back in the Premier League.”
Is he any good?
He’s £1.2million good… solid midfielder and proved last season he is very capable at this level
