An Audience with John Ryan – What Have We Actually Learnt?

On Saturday morning Viking Supporters Co-operative Chair Gareth Thomas was granted an audience with John Ryan, and duly put a number of questions to the Rovers Chairman regarding the recent monumental shift in approach from the club. On Sunday a transcript of this meeting was made available by Gareth on the VSC’s message-board. The manner in which Dean Saunders was appointed was not covered in their discussion, but below you’ll find the transcript of what was and our own feedback on the points raised, and those skirted round. How Seven Days Ruined the Reputation of Doncaster Rovers

Little more than a year ago, aboard a Belgrade bound train at Bijelo-Polje on the Serbian-Montenegrin border. Hungover, sleep-deprived and nurturing an ill-thought-out late-breakfast beer, in the company of three fellow Wales and the loudest buffet car operator this side of the Caucasus’. After some time waiting the border guard appeared; he looked over my passport, smirked, and as he handed it back to me said “Ah, Doncaster… good football”. Continue reading

Reasons to be Cheerful; 1, 2, 3

A concerning stat ahead of this weekend’s clash with Palace is that if they do not succeed in beating The Eagles then Rovers will equal a club record of twenty consecutive matches without a League win. That this record was set at the start of our 1997-98 annus horriblus will give as clear an indication as to how poor this current run of form is. However, no matter how far away that Tuesday 1st March night at Pride Park seems, it should also be noted, that it is just that, a poor run of form, and not as it was fourteen years ago; a crisis. So into the gloom we cast three beams of light, and give you reasons to be cheerful. Continue reading

South Yorkshire Times

When Steve Brooker unleashed two and a half years of medical room dwelling frustration to send the matchball flying beyond Chris Weale on Saturday, he effectively confirmed a significant footballing shift within South Yorkshire. The point Brooker’s strike enabled Rovers to gain at home secured their Championship status for a fourth year, whilst up the road Barnsley’s draw at Bramall Lane confined their opponents to the third tier, the current home of their city rivals. The South Riding’s Big Two will next year reside in places three and four in the county’s pecking order. Continue reading

Book Review – Dare to Dream

When Saturday Comes magazine recently asked us to review a copy of John Ryan’s autobiography Dare to Dream; On Life, Football & Cosmetic Surgery. That review featured in the July 2010 edition of WSC magazine, and can also now be found on their excellent website. Though we do strongly advise you to buy a copy of When Saturday Comes, you can read that review here. Continue reading

Novel Gazing

John Ryan’s got a new book out you know. Yes, yes I thought you might have done. As a Rovers fan you would be hard pushed not to know about the launch of John Ryan’s autobiographical account of Rovers’ last dozen years. Dare to Dream starts with a pair of tits as it documents Rovers plight from the involvement of Messrs Richardson and W***er through to a second Championship season. And it’s also got a big pair of breasts on the front cover (you see what they did there) to acknowledge JR’s plastic surgery based wealth. In all sorts of ways, it’s very hard to miss. Continue reading

Rich and Richie

Poor headline, relatively interesting content. Over the past week or so a couple of people of particualr interest to Rovers fans; John Ryan and Richie Wellens have had their opinions published in the media. First off John Ryan who was interviewed in a national newspaper at the end of last month, though as it was in The Sun, it completely passed us by. Anyway if you also missed it we’ve a reasonable digest here. Amidst the usual soundbites about the state of the club five years ago and lazy journalistic box ticking on the subject of Melinda Messenger JR actually made some wholesome and agreeable points on the subjects of football club ownership. Continue reading
