Decade Review; 10 Years in 5 Teams – #5 Worst XI

And so we wind our ten years in five teams feature up with the last and most certainly least impressive XI. We’ve had the good, the cult, the borrowed and the worldly of Rovers players of the last decade and now it’s time to bow out on a low point with the Worst XI to represent Doncaster Rovers in the Noughties. To ensure we encompass all available awfulness we’ve tinkered with the formation once again to play a suitably danger-laden 3-4-3 system. Continue reading

Decade Review; 10 Years in 5 Teams – #4 Borrowed XI

Yes, we’re still going with this and now after the Best, the Cult and the International XIs of the last three days we bring you a Borrowed XI. A look back at some of Rovers key loan stars from the past ten years. As with before, if a player has been picked for one XI already this week then they won’t feature in this one, so again there are notable absentees such as Brian Stock and Neil Sullivan. We’ve also had to venture away from our usual 4-4-2 formation and have instead gone to a 4-3-3. We’re tactically diverse like that you know. It must be Sean O’Driscoll’s influence. Anyway, here we go with the Borrowed XI. Continue reading

Decade Review; 10 Years in 5 Teams – #3 World XI

There is one downside to this feature, which I didn’t envisage when planning it, and that is for five days straight I have to write a different version of effectively the same introductory paragraph. So here we go for day three, as Viva Rovers honours Doncaster Rovers’ past decade through naming five different line-ups which offer an effective summary of those ten years. On Monday it was the ‘Best XI’ of the decade, yesterday saw the ‘Cult Hero XI’, and today brings us a World XI. The Noughties were the decade that the penchant for overseas players began to filter down from the Premier League to the lower divisions, meaning that even lowly Rovers could boast international stars*. As previously stated in order to cover more ground I am only allowing players to make one XI over the course of the week so you there are some notable absentees, but we shall soldier on regardless. Here goes…

(*To avoid disappointment I suggest lowering your expectations of both the term international and star for the duration of this article) Continue reading

Decade Review; 10 Years in 5 Teams – #2 The Cult XI

In case the title is not explanatory enough, and in case you missed yesterday’s post I shall begin with a brief introduction. To mark the end of probably the best decade there has ever been to be a Doncaster Rovers fan Viva Rovers’ has decided to pick five different teams that offer an effective summary of the past ten years. Yesterday we began this series with what we considered The Best XI, and now today we offer you line-up number two, the Cult Hero XI; a team of players who may not have been the best to don the red and white hoops, but there performances and their character were enough to ensure that they will be remembered fondly. Before we crack on I should also point out that  one key criteria in selecting these sides was to not place any player in more than one team. As such, cult heroes Tim Ryan, Paul Barnes and Gregg Blundell have sacrificed their place in view of making yesterday’s Best XI. However, there is one exception to this rule as you will soon see. All clear? Right, on we go… Continue reading

Decade Review; 10 Years in 5 Teams – #1 The Best XI

So that was the noughties. Terrible name, brilliant decade. If you have followed Doncaster Rovers for its entirety then you have lucked out over the course of the last ten years, because quite frankly there will never be a better decade in this club’s history. Yes, we could stay in the Championship until 2021, we may even push on to the Premier League, but even achievements such as they will not match what we have experienced since the dawn of the Millennium. It began with an uninspiring goalless draw at Scarborough’s McCain Stadium and ended with an equally disappointing 1-0 defeat at Coventry, but in between was one hell of a journey. Continue reading
