Hoops Around the World

As its international week and we’ve been spared a Doncaster Rovers fixture whilst Brian Stock sits on standby for Wales, we thought it only right to fill the void with a feature tenuously linked to the world of international football. Over the past few days we’ve asked via our social media outlets where is the most unexpected place you have seen someone in the red and white hoops, or indeed any Rovers related merchandise, and today we bring yo the results of our findings.

We are lucky enough, for this feature at least, that though Rovers have reached the second tier a consequence of the speed of their ascent after so many years in the doldrums is the club’s fanbase remains quite small. And so we are still able to be afforded that giddy rush when we spot someone else wearing a Rovers shirt, or scarf, or a car with a Rovers sticker peeling from it’s back window. Fans of Barcelona or Manchester United or Liverpool will never experience that, and their holidays will be poorer for it.

So here on this map are the unusual sightings of Rovers related merchandise that have been shared with us so far. Sensing an inevitable joke we made it clear from the outset that “on the pitch at Wembley” did not count. Nor were we including family members, friends, or people onto which you have enforced Rovers merchandise. So whilst they are not included on this map, should anyone in future say they have seen a local man in Khartoum or the Bolivian jungle wearing a Rovers shirt we do at least know how they got them. If you’ve anymore sightings let us know in the comments box and we’ll add them on the map in due course.

  1. I’ve not personally seen it, but I know a guy who works – or used to work – in the British Embassy in Brasilia is a very keen Rovers supporter. He must have something on show surely?!

  2. Everytime that I go to my father in law’s house in Brisbane, Australia!!! Whether that be in the study, garage, lounge room or the shirt on his back. Even his office at work is a montage of Rovers memorabilia!!!

    • Great stuff Andrew, though unfortuantely it falls foul of the small-print for inclusion on our map;

  3. Sainsburys in Cwmbran in late 80s, saw a guy in the ‘wavy hoop’ shirt. He had no association with Donny but as a kid has decided to support them “cos none of his mates did”. Despite my own allegiances I thought this was bizarre !

  4. I saw a Rovers shirt (Richardson era no sponsor?) hung up in a garage in Kahoe, New Zealand. The owner had a fine collection of different shirts.

  5. I saw someone in a Rovers shirt last year, in Busch Gardens, Tampa, Florida. Didn’t speak to him though, so I dunno if he was from Donny or not.
