2011-12, match reports

Reading 2-0 Doncaster Rovers

Aaaaaaaah. Please make it stop. Please. The wait for a first league win of the season continues after a display at Reading from the Rovers perhaps best described as lack-lustre. Sean O’Driscoll shuffled his pack, with Neil Sullivan back in goal and Shelton Martis returning to the back four, but the outcome was sadly no different as Doncaster struggled to create opportunities throughout the afternoon, and succumbed to a 2-0 loss that leaves them four points adrift at the foot of the table.

Reading kicked the match off and pressed from the start, forcing the game’s first telling chance six minutes in as a Simon Church cross was met by Mikele Leigertwood, but his header was turned behind by Sullivan. Rovers settled as the half wore on, but all the had to show from the opening half hour was a corner which had come to nothing. Reading however, were getting closer to opening the scoring, Church having an effort saved by Sullivan, before Leigertwood got onto the ball in the right channel but his shot flew wide of the far post. Just before the break Jay Tabb brought another save from the Rovers keeper, Sullivan tipping the ball away and then reacting quick enough to beat the advancing home players to the rebound and ensure the half ended goalless.

The second half would continue in much the same vein, with Jobi McAnuff having the first effort after the interval, though his strike was well wide.At the other end there was a rare glance of goal for Rovers as Kyle Bennett curled an effort beyond the far top corner. Seven minutes into the half though Reading took the lead; a high ball forward reached the Rovers area; Sullivan came for it, but spilled it under the challenge of Adam Le Fondre and Church slotted the loose ball into the unguarded net.

At one-up Reading continued to press; Joseph Mills testing Sullivan from distance, with Noel Hunt putting the rebound over from close range. Just before the hour mark the Biscuitmen increased their lead as Mills’ cross from the left was met by Le Fondre who headed into the corner of the Rovers net. Rovers made a feeble attempt to get back into it, but all they could muster were a couple of long-range efforts from Jamie Coppinger, one wide, the other over.
