Three and In – New Signing Frenzy

Typical, you wait ages for a close season signing, and then three turn up at once. After some protracted making their mind up time over their summer trialists Rovers have gone and snapped up three of them in one day, in arguably the biggest signing frenzy since the BBC mistakenly broadcast a Scatman John video during their See Hear programme.

Yep, though Rowan Vine has been allowed to move on Rovers have today tied down the services of three recent trialists; defenders Oscar Radford and Rachid Bouhenna, plus forward Giles Barnes. First of the trio to put pen to paper (or at least, first to be confirmed by the official club site) was Oscar Radford, the teenage defender returning to his native South Yorkshire from Hungarian side Ferencvaros whom he joined from Sheffield United two years ago.

Twenty-year old Algerian centre-back Rachid Bouhenna joins Rovers from France where he spent last season playing in Ligue 2 for Sedan. He has featured regularly in Rovers’ pre-season games and having been well regarded by supporters has signed a one year contract. In the past week there had been speculation, born from a comment by Sean O’Driscoll, that Bouhenna would not be taken on owing to the language barrier, but the defender laughed off claims that his English is poor telling reporters; “Je ne comprends pas. Ce que vous dites à moi?”

Last but by no means least to sign for Rovers is Giles Barnes, who has joined on an initial six-month deal. The attacking midfielder made his name at Derby who he joined as a trainee before progressing to the first team in 2005. The attacking midfielder remained at Pride Park until 2009 when he moved on, first to Fulham on loan, where he failed to make an appearance under Roy Hodgson, and then onto West Brom where he made over twenty appearances… before Roy Hodsgon pitched up. Released by Albion at the end of last season he had been linked with both Monaco and Nottingham Forest at the start of the summer so his arrival in Doncaster is something of a surprise. If Sean O’Driscoll can get the best out of him then Barnes is certainly an exciting prospect and a very good addition to the squad.
