Long running Rovers’ supporter’ team the Donny R’sonists were in action today, defeating Grimsby’s Internet Mariners Old Skool in an IFA League match. The R’sonists 7-1 win at the Ian Wilson Community Sports Village in Rossington this morning was their largest victory of the season, and the match was as ever played out in the right spirit with barely a foul committed in the whole 90 minutes.
The match got off to a decidedly even start, with neither side mustering a shot on target in the opening quarter of the fixture. However, the R’sonists soon forged ahead thanks to the pace and finishing of Matt Findlay; twice the forward got onto the end of through balls and on both occasions side-stepped his man before slotting past the visiting ‘keeper. His third was arguably the pick of the first half goals though as Marc Cartlidge controlled a deep cross on his chest before back-heeling to Findlay and he made space for a shot; curling the ball into the far corner.
The R’sonists moved personnel around in the second half but considered to have the better of things adding to their tally through Cartlidge who broke onto a neat flicked pass from manager Matt Smith before lobbing the advancing keeper and finding the far corner of the net. Quarter of an hour after the break it was 5-0 to the R’sonists as the ball fell to Karl Scott just inside the area from a corner and he successfully toe-ended through a crowd and into the roof of the net.
Grimsby were rewarded for their hard work as they found the net themselves; Andy Sheldrake’s interception inadvertently splitting his own defence and the Grimsby forward won the race to the ball to poke it beyond Andy Harriman. The R’sonists would go on to add to their lead though, making it 6-1 as Cartlidge got in behind the visitors’ defence and controlled a long goal-kick from Harriman, before chipping the ball over the advancing ‘keeper. The scoring was rounded off by Findlay though as he was brought down in the area and dispatched the resulting spot-kick himself to make it 7-1 to the R’sonists.
