A big weekend in English football looms into view, striding out of the mire of transfer rumours, retained lists and sky-high ticket price increases. No, not the Champions League Final, the real big weekend; the Football League play-offs. Stevenage, Torquay, Peterborough, Huddersfield, Reading and Swansea, six sides not really steeped in Football history, well, aside from Huddersfield, have their moments in the sun at Old Trafford and Wembley respectively in a bid to climb a step up the pyramid to a new level.
Only one of these six, Stevenage, can emulate Rovers’ own feat of winning through the play-offs at the first attempt. Few clubs can boats a play-off record like Rovers; Doncaster of course have been involved in two sets of promotion play-offs, the first Conference ones in 2003, and latterly the League One play-offs in 2008. On each occasion Rovers reached the final and won it, an enviable record.
Earlier this month we acknowledged Sir Francis Tierney Day on this website, acknowledging the midfielder’s Golden Goal of 10th May 2003, which saw off Dagenham & Redbridge at Stoke. Well this week brought the much more subdued, St James Hayter Day, three years since his 47th minute header saw off Leeds United at Wembley. As we missed it Wednesday, now seems as good a time s any to acknowledge Hayter’s feat as we replay his goal in episode 128 of Viva Video. He really will head anything.
