Doncaster Rovers Belles got off to a great start in the new FA Women’s Super League last night with victory in their opening game. The Belles defeated Lincoln Ladies at Sincil Bank thanks to a goal from long serving player Vicky Exley on the stroke of half-time.
Doncaster had already threatened to take the lead with Aine O’Gorman having a header cleared off the line and Precious Hamilton lifting an effort over the bar in earlier in the first half. Lincoln too created chances with former Doncaster player Carla Cantrell lobbing Helen Alderson, but also the Belle’s keeper’s crossbar. After the break the Lady Imps pushed harder for an equaliser with Sue Smith striking the post from distance, but the Belles held firm and indeed could’ve added to their tally late in the game through Hamilton. However, the midfielder couldn’t find the net, putting one effort wide of the post before being denied by an excellent save as she broke through late on.
Highlights of the game can now be found on the Belles’ website. Next up for the Belles is a trip to face Everton at the Arriva Stadium, home of Marine FC.
