No, you’re not going crazy. It is only Wednesday, but we’ve decided to hit you with a bonus episode of Viva Video by means of a preview to the start of the inaugural FA Women’s Super League which gets under way tonight. Eight teams were rewarded with a place in the new semi-professional league and quite rightly one of those recipients were our own Doncaster Rovers Belles.
One of the longest established women’s football teams the Belles were formed in 1969 by female matchday and lottery staff from Doncaster Rovers. The team adopted the Belles monicker from the club’s Belle Vue ground and steadily grew over the course of the next two decades before lifting the FA Women’s Cup in 1991. Along with Arsenal they are perhaps the best known female football side in the country and are certainly Doncaster’s most consistent sporting team, having been at the top tier of their sport for quarter of a century.
As such it constantly baffles me why the side are not given more press in the borough, and also through the Rovers own media. Their acceptance into the Super League was a massive boost to the club and a hugely significant step in the club’s history, but it didn’t get so much as a mention on the DRFC official site. Viva Rovers thouh intends to try and redress this balance and over the coming weeks hope to offer coverage where we can to the Belles first Super League season. Their campaign begins tonight with a local derby against Lincoln Ladies at Sincil Bank. Its a 7:45pm kick-off and I urge you to get there if you can. In the mean-time watch this season preview from ESPN (who will be screening some games too) to get yourself in the mood for the new season.
