Viva Video CXIX

For Rovers fans of a certain age Queens Park Rangers means one thing, and one thing only; a glorious and unexpected Cup win from the 1984-85 season. Unfortunately, footage of David Harle’s goal from the 3rd round FA Cup tie at Belle Vue remains the internet’s loss and so we’ve had to find an alternate QPR game that fits the bill; namely their UEFA Cup 2nd round match with Partizan Belgrade.

Ranger’s were at home for the first leg of this tie, or rather they were drawn at home. UEFA took as dim a view of QPR’s plastic Loftus Road pitch as any visiting player who had ever played on it and so Rangers had to find an alternate home for the night, meaning that Partizan travelled not to Shepherds Bush, but to Highbury. The R’s fans who chose not to commute across the city would miss out, as the match produced two absolutely stunning strikes. Dragan Mance, who would tragically die in a road accident within a year, put Partizan 2-1 ahead with an incredible dipping volley, only to see his goal matched in quality by Rangers’ Warren Neill in the second half. These goals were two of eight scored on the night as QPR triumphed 6-2…

So, to the second leg then and a trip to what was then Yugoslavia and an aptly partisan atmosphere in Belgrade. The home side needed to score at least four goals if they were to overturn the Londoners and incredibly managed just that. That impressive turnaround could’ve been reason enough for choosing this video for this week’s episode, but gloriously this clip offers so much more…

Serbian folk rock soundtrack? Check. Graphics straight off a Sega Master System? Check. Hilarious third goal? Yep. Epic winning goal celebration as scorer attempts to scale high fence to the fans whilst being mobbed by pitchside staff? You better believe it. Player falling over advertising board en route to epic celebration? Oh yes. For this bounty we are about to receive we are truly thankful…
