Donny R’sonists 3-1 Barnsley Supporters FC

After going four months without a match, owing to injuries, venue unavailability and snow amongst other things, long-running Rovers’ fans’ team the Donny R’sonists finally returned to action on Saturday morning. The R’sonists took on the Barnsley Supporters team on the grass at the Ian Wilson Community Sports Village in Rossington, and had the rare luxury of three subs for this IFA league game.

Manager Matt Smith went for a tried and tested 4-4-2 formation and it paid off as the R’sonists took control from the start, playing the sort of neat passing football Sean O’Driscoll would be proud of. The R’sonists patient approach brought chances for Matty Findley and Trevor Charlton early on, but the visitors could have been 2-0 up after quarter of an hour had it not been for R’sonists Director of Football Glen Wilson; the defender twice sliding to clear off the line with ‘keeper Andy Harriman beaten.

Scares over the R’sonists pushed on and took the lead midway through the half; some neat football ending with Allan Riggall releasing Matty Findley in the right channel and his firm low drive just deflected off a defender on its way inside the far post. Before half-time Donny had doubled their lead as Findley flicked the ball into the path of Andy Sheldrake and his low cross was turned into his own net by a lunging Barnsley defender.

The R’sonists changed things round after the break with ‘keeper Andy Harriman going up front for the last half hour, but not before he’d come off his line to make a smart save five minutes into the second half. Harriman made just as much of an impact up front too as he netted the R’sonists third with a measured finish to wrong-foot the visitors’ keeper. Findley threatened to add to the R’sonists tally, but the game’s only other goal went to the visitors. Stand-in keeper Wilson coming for a corner he was never likely to get leaving the Barnsley forward an open goal into which to volley a last-minute consolation.

Donny R’sonists line-up (4-4-2); Andy Harriman; Ian McKenzie (Richard Dillon), Glen Wilson, Matt Harriman, Louis Bailey; Allan Riggall, Andy Sheldrake (Christian McKenzie), Marc Cartlidge (Matt Smith), Rob Newton; Trevor Charlton, Matty Findley
