Time for our regular weekly scramble across the internet for footage vaguely relevent to Rovers upcoming opponents as we bring you episode 113 of Viva Video. The prospect of a trip to Millwall at the weekend brings a unique challenge to the research for this feature, as whilst the internet is rife with clips relating to The ‘Wall, finding ones that aren’t narrated by Danny Dyer is like trying to find a needle concealed about a person.
Thankfully I’ve struck lucky and almost found exactly what I went looking for. In 1989 Millwall, enjoying a rare season in the top flight, met Arsenal at The Den in a feisty London derby. Unbeknown to the players, for the duration of the game referee David Elleray was wearing a microphone for the Granada documentary Out of Order.
Some of the resulting footage is what we bring you today, sadly not the original documentary but a subsequent look back at the clips from another football show. That said the film still shows the amount of abuse officials receive from the players themselves during the game. Look out for Lee Dixon being dismissed like the hired help and Tony Adams becoming a disturbing cross of Joe Pasquale and Panorama reporter John Sweeney mid-Scientology meltdown. Enjoy
