Regular readers of Viva Rovers (Hello Stu and Barry) will be aware that in recent weeks we have begun to turn this feature over to Rovers’ upcoming opponents. As such we would like to take this opportunity to suggest that the fact this has also corresponded with back to back defeats is merely coincidence. A painful and frustrating coincidence. Therefore, like Nick Clegg, we’re soldiering on in the face of criticism and focussing episode of 107 of the feature on Middlesbrough. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

Depending on your age when you think Middlesbrough you are likely to think of one of three teams. The Jack Charlton led Second Division conquerors of the mid 1970s. Brian Robson’s expensively assembled cosmopolitan Boxing Day avoiding relegation side of the mid 1990s. Or Steve McClaren’s only truly threatening when three goals down UEFA Cup finalists of five seasons ago. As with anyone who doesn’t really understand the question we’ve gone for the middle option and focussed specifically on one cog in that lavish but ultimately faulty wheel.

Juninho joined Middlesbrough for £4.75m in October 1995 with thousands of steel drum toting, sombrero wearing Teesiders turning up to the Riverside just to see his signing announced. Testament to the North East wit he was soon nicknamed ‘The Little Fella’ as he teamed up with ‘Boro’s other exotic names, Emerson, Fabrizio Ravanelli and Phil Stamp to produce exciting football in a succession of terrible away kits.
