With Rovers’ two fixtures against Leicester City last season ultimately falling in midweek we have not yet had the opportunity to focus on the Foxes in our weekly media feature Viva Video. So, having used up most available Rovers related footage in our 106 episode run we’ll happily turn the spotlight onto this weekend’s opponents.
If I think Leicester City, there is one match that comes straight to mind. Early season 1997-98, a warm midweek night at a packed Filbert Street as Leicester host Arsenal. What transpired was an epic, a six goal thriller with three of those strikes coming in injury time. It also featured a fantastic Dennis Bergkamp hat-trick, regarded by many as one of the best hat-tricks of all-time. But whilst his first goal is perfectly placed and his third is incredibly sublime, his second seems a little out of keeping, so as far as I’m concerned the accolade still sits at Jamie Coppinger’s feet.
Anyway, enough of that. Enjoy this clip which sits slap-back in the middle of football’s transitional period with old-school centre halves like Steve Bould and Steve Walsh and journeymen such as Tony Cottee mixing it with the trickery and more technical approach of the new foreign imports; Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars. Would you ever have thought that David Platt would have been on the same pitch as Emile Heskey, let alone desperately trying to hook one of his shots off the line? In short, was this really 13 years ago?
