As the old saying goes, why have a possible six centre halves, when you could have seven? Rovers have today added another body to their defensive ranks with the signing of Brazilian central defender Dennis Souza. Joining on a short-term contract, Souza will be with the Rovers until February pending international clearance being granted by someone or other.
Born in Sao Paulo, Souza started in his domestic league before moving to Europe and a spell in Belgium playing for Standard Liege and Charleroi. The tall defender moved on to Barnsley in 2007, spending two seasons at Oakwell. He then went on to take the obvious next step, leaving the Tykes to join Al-Sailiya Sports Club in Qatar. The riches of the Middle East were seemingly not all they’re cracked up to be and having failed to find a single newsagent in Doha that stocked the Sheffield Star Souza has been back in South Yorkshire training with the Rovers for the best part of the month.
If given permission to play by whoever it is who decides these things then Souza will wear the number 25 shirt at Doncaster, meaning he’ll be forever playing in the shadow of such past greats as Erdem Artun, Nic Priet and Michael Timlin.
But enough about who he’s played for and what he’ll wear, the big question is o course what are we going to sing at him? Well, here’s our suggestion, to the tune of Denis by Blondie;
Dennis Dennis, he was born in Brazil
Dennis Dennis, he now lives near Tickhill
Dennis Dennis, makes wearing headbands coo-oo-oo-oo-ool
