Viva Video LXXXVII

The new season can’t come soon enough for us, particularly for this feature, which bundles through the summer months like a British female tennis player. The problem being you see that three months without Rovers action, means pretty much three months without fresh footage with which to furnish your regular video based features. Thankfully we have managed to hold out through the lean months and so are able to end our close season Viva Video excursions with a great piece of footage, namely an ex-Rovers player scoring in a Europa League game.

As reported on Viva Rovers last week former Doncaster defender Dave Morley ensured that he’ll not have to pay for a drink in North Wales any time soon as he found the net for his current team Bangor City in their Europa League second qualifying round match against FC Honka of Finland. Having notched a creditable draw in Espoo, Bangor trailed in the return game, played at the Racecourse Ground, until five minutes from time. At which point Morley popped up to score the equaliser, heading in a corner from the left to set up a dramatic final few minutes that ended with Bangor nicking a last-minute winner to secure a fantastic victory.

Sadly for Bangor the joy was to be short-lived as the third qualifying round began this week and the Welsh Cup winners last night crashed to an 8-2 defeat away at Portuguese side Maritimo. City, 2-0 down at half-time, were dealt a killer blow with the dismissal of Jamie Brewerton just after the break. There was brief excitement as Nicky Ward pulled the score back to 3-1 with seventeen minutes to go, but then Maritimo ran in four goals in the next seven minutes to secure a significant first leg win.

Forget the sadness though, for now lets relive the high points and enjoy Dave Morley’s moment of European fame. Seven years after he scored for Rovers in the Conference Play-Off Final, here, courtesy of S4C football show Sgorio’s excellent Welsh language highlights, is Dave Morley; European Hero.
