2010-11, match reports

Not Quite the Way to Hammer Villa

Rovers returned to training this week and as is now becoming tradition the opening few days also brought the club’s first pre-season friendly fixture against local non-league opposition. For the third season running Rovers travelled to face Northern Counties East League opposition, having faced Rossington Main and Armthorpe Welfare in previous seasons tonight Doncaster took on Askern Villa and won 2-0.

Second-half goals from James Hayter and Dean Shiels gave Rovers the win with few players featuring for more than half of the game. New signing George Friend made his first appearance for the cub in the first half whilst there were also a few trialists in action for Rovers, one of whom was believed to be ex-West Ham player Josh Payne. The crowd of over 800 will have meant a decent day for Villa too as they prepare for the new NCEL season. Rovers will next see action on Tuesday when they face Quorn, though the exact venue for this game is still to be confirmed.
