Great news for Rovers fans today with the long anticipated announcement that John Oster has signed a new deal with the club finally confirmed. The midfielder has been reportedly set to sign for the best part of a fortnight, but the club finally confirmed that he has agreed a new contract today. Oster who initially joined last summer on a six month contract, which was extended to the end of the season in January, has signed a two-year deal today.
Though the pursuit of Billy Sharp is grabbing the Rovers related headlines the retention of John Oster is the news that was most keenly anticipated by Viva Rovers. Personally I felt Oster was Rovers’ player of the season during 2009-10 and has fitted perfectly into Sean O’Driscoll’s system. Having spent much of his career as a winger its clear that Oster relishes the creative freedom and trust afforded him by O’Driscoll and with captain Brian Stock out for much of the season Oster became the central fulcrum of our system, playing in a sort of point-guard role. To retain this talent on a two-year contract is a great piece of business by the club that should not be underestimated.
