After much speculation about whether they would stay with Vandannel, or follow the other rats to safer higher ground, Rovers this week announced that they are indeed jumping kit manufacturer. The club have teamed up with Just Sport Pro Club to ensure that the player will be decked out in Nike for the season ahead. Speculation as to what exactly the design of the new kit will be, has begun, though its very difficult to go wrong with red and white hoops really.
Difficult, but not impossible, as Matchwinner proved in the mid 1990s. After a brief mid 80s revival Rovers had once again dispensed with their ‘traditional’ hoops for the best part of a decade before Matchwinner chose to revive them once more in time for the 1993-94 season. The 1990s were not a time for sensible kit design though, and why would anyone have simple red and white hoops when you could instead have, unnecessarily jagged red and white hoops that looked like they’d been coloured in by the worst class in a particularly under-acheiving primary school.
This week’s Viva Video contains rare footage of that kit, making the ‘crazy tackle’ of Jason Cousins only the second most horrific thing to be featured.
