If you’ve ever seen the baseball film then you’ll not only have lost two hours of your life but you will also be familiar with the line “If you dream it, they will come.” When it comes to Rovers’ new signings in the past few months a more apt line would probably be “If you don’t expect them, then suddenly they’ll provide a welcome lift as they turn up out of nowhere”, First came Shelton Martis, signed on transfer deadline day, and now he is followed by today’s surprise acquisition of Arsenal youth product Jay Emmanuel-Thomas. And if it doesn’t lead to Rovers fans belting out the Wings hit name-checked in the title of this article then you ought to be ashamed of yourselves.
The double-barrelled teenager has joined Rovers from Arsenal on a month long loan spell, and is set to go straight into the squad for today’s game with Crystal Palace. Despite being a long-standing member of the Arsenal youth set-up Emmanuel-Thomas will be familiar to Doncaster supporters having played against the Rovers for Blackpool at the Keepmoat Stadium in October. And not only did he play in that game, but he scored a pretty impressive goal as well, finding composure in the midst of an end to end encounter to sidestep the Rovers back-line and find the bottom corner of the North Stand net.
Since his return to the capital from Blackpool in November Emmanuel-Thomas has featured a number of times in Arsene Wenger’s Premier League squad and played in the FA Cup defeat at Stoke earlier this month. A central midfielder with a sizable presence he could prove a useful addition to the Rovers line-up at just the right time, with captain Brian Stock looking set for a further absence.
