One of our better titles I’m sure you’ll agree, and it brings forth good news too. Doncaster Rovers’ on loan striker Billy Sharp has been presented with the PFA Fans’ Championship Player of the Month Award for December. The Rovers’ forward was announced as the divisional winner of the accolade today and it marks the culmination of an impressively prolific run of form for Sharp, who has struck eight goals in his last nine matches for the Rovers.
Sharp, who appears to have been wittily nicknamed Sharpy by his current colleagues, struck in four of Rovers’ five matches in December, with only the Boxing Day blank at Coventry blotting his copy book for the month. That form was enough to see him secure this honour over fellow nominees Ipswich’s Jon Stead, Peterborough’s George Boyd, and Alan Smith of Newcastle. If you are in any doubt as to why Sharp triumphed then a succinct summary was offered by Sean O’Driscoll on the club’s official website; “If he gets chances, he takes them”. You can’t really argue with that.
