More video fun this week, and I’ve decided to give it all over to the opposition in an effort to remind myself that I do quite like Crystal Palace. Because, once Neil Warnock takes over a team it becomes really hard to remember how you genuinely feel about them, so overcome are you with hatred and annoyance. But enough about that blight on football and back to the game itself. I’ve gone way back to find an enjoyable Palace video, 1971-72 season in fact. It does show Palace losing, but consider that pay-back for regularly housing Neil Warnock and Simon Jordan.
Quite simply there are so many reasons to love this week’s video. First off the set, which makes it look like Brian Moore is hosting The Big Match from the bridge of a space-ship fashioned out of unwanted pool tables. The sliding back-drop is also a thing of beauty and its a crying shame you can’t quite see the desperate crew members hauling it out the way. Look out for the nice use of freeze-frames as they run through the team line-ups and the blatant woman oggling from the ITV camera crew. Although in fairness to them the final female Palace they focus on is hypnotically stunning, the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in a football ground… and I say that as a man who has seen Catherine Jenkins sing the National Anthem before various Wales games.
Anyway, I’ve digressed and also had to have a time out between paragraphs. Where was I? Something football related? Yes, Palace. Other great things to listen and look out for. John Hughes’ vital statistics should give us all hope of rekindling football careers… that policeman appears to be gearing up for a version of YMCA… Eddie Coker’s sheer unbridled joy at opening the scoring… some testing back-passes… glove-less ‘keepers… and of course one of the most beautiful kits of all time courtesy of Crystal Palace. Lap it up people, lap it up.
