No Buzz for the Bees – FA Cup 3rd round draw

“Doncaster… what a let down”“We got Doncaster, magic of the FA Cup my arse”“Doncaster at home, in my best FA Cup dreams that never happened”“Hmmm… hard to get excited by Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup”“I don’t want to play Doncaster Rovers. I demand they redo the draw!”“Doncaster. F**king Doncaster. F**k off FA” That was a sample of reactions from Brentford fans on Twitter to the FA Cup 3rd round draw. Ah what it is to be loved.

As an unfashionable team in the top two divisions our FA Cup destiny has already been foretold to us. It has been written that from this point forth until relegation intervenes we shall continue to ruin the dreams of lower and non-league football teams who had harboured dreams at a big third round tie. In turn these teams will then look distinctly underwhelmed as the television cameras placed in their social club for the draw pan round the squad whilst the Chairman can be heard whimpering somewhere in the background. Drawing Rovers in the FA Cup 3rd round must be what it feels like to be handed a set of dictionaries after winning Countdown.

So apologies to Brentford, but to London we will go on FA Cup 3rd round day, which for those wanting a more specific reference is Saturday 2nd January. Its only three seasons since Rovers and Brentford last met in this competition, with Doncaster triumphing 1-0 at Griffin Park in the 1st round back in November 2006. Rovers scored twice that day but only triumphed 1-0 as Mark McCammon’s shot, though travelling between the posts, also went through a hole in the side-netting and was assumed by the match officials to have gone wide. Maybe a similar incident this time round might reawaken the enthusiasm of the Bees’ fans.

  2. Yeah you are right Mike… I had a memory block when writing it and couldn’t remember if it was McCammon or Jonathan Forte, and then forgot to actually check when I got to the end of the article.
