A disappointing afternoon in the capital for the Belles this weekend as they were on the receiving end of the reigning champions frustration. Thanks to a swathe of postponed matches due to international commitments this was only Arsenal’s second game of the FA Women’s Premier League season and they seemed determined to make up for lost time as they ran out 8-1 winners at Borehamwood’s Meadow Park ground.
The home side took the lead just before the quarter of an hour mark as Gemma Davison found the net with a well taken strike from the edge of the area. However, the Belles were soon back level as they equalised midway through the first half, a great run and cross from Precious Hamilton on the right was turned home by Liz Hansen. Sadly for the Belles this would be as good as the afternoon got as Arsenal retook the lead almost immediately as Davison struck her second of the game. Arsenal were not done and went on to run in three further goals before half-time; A Kim Little chip, a header from Faye White and a goal from Rachel Yankey making it 5-1 at half-time.
In the second half there were less goals for the hosts, but no less disappointment for the Belles whose bad day at the office continued. Arsenal added a sixth with a close range header from Helen Lander before Little grabbed her second of the game as she rounded Belles ‘keeper Nicola Hobbs. The scoring was completed by substitute Jennifer Beattie and now the Belles must regroup before a tricky tie at Sunderland on Thursday.
