This feature has been going over a year now and, I know I say this often, but it continues to be a lengthy task to bring you relevant and interesting clips from the wide world of the internet. In fact I’m only three or four weeks away from bringing you footage of a ludicrous goal someone scored whilst playing as Rovers on FIFA07, or a flip book sketch presentation of Jamie Coppinger’s best haircuts.
Of course sometimes you cannot see the woods for the trees and whilst I may have mined the seams dry in some Rovers related genres there are whole other beds left untouched. So, whilst I struggle to fill this segment with the ascent of man step forward the women. The Doncaster Belles, now the Rovers Belles, have long been one of the top women’s football clubs in the country, inspiring a book and a television series in the mid 90s. Whilst we’ve often drummed up their achievements on Viva Rovers we have rarely acknowledged them in this segment so its time for that to change, before Vicky Exley hurls herself under a horse at the St Leger.
One of the things that has struck me about the Belles in recent years whilst compiling this site is that their achievements on the field have often been matched off it. With the Rovers’ official website barely pausing to acknowledge its Premier League stars outside of Cup Final appearances and England call-ups the Belles have established their own media output. None too flashy, but concise, coherent and constant none the less. And more to the point the Belles know hoe to market themselves too as seen by this week’s Viva Video instalment. Watch. Enjoy. And then tap those you know with influence for sponsorship, to help give the Belles the support they deserve.
