In all honesty, I’m not actually sure what the future holds for this feature. After nearly fifty episodes this piece could be about to bite the bullet courtesy of the Football Data Co spies who appear to be on permanent sentry duty outside Viva Towers. If we cannot put up pictures taken by ourselves on shoddy camera phones, then the chances are we won’t be able to link to video footage either. However, until our web presence is suspended for an inevitable third time our twelfth episode of the reincarnation is a belter.
Tomorrow Rovers face Ipswich Town, a side synonymous with the sadly recently departed Sir Bobby Robson who spent thirteen years as manager at Portman Road. Under his reign the Tractor Boys went from provincial also-rans to European finalists and perennial title challengers, and secured their first FA Cup triumph in 1978. In the semi-final that year Ipswich beat Rovers opponents from earlier this week West Bromwich Albion at Villa Park, another side associated with Robson. Sir Bobby had seven seasons as a player at The Hawthorns and is remembered just as fondly by the Albion. So to acknowledge this week’s opponents and offer our own belated tribute to Sir Bobby Robson we give you this; highlights of the 1978 FA Cup Final. Look out early on for the very definition of a ‘brave header’.
