Viva Video XXXIX (Carling Cup Special)

Yeah that’s right, I’m cashing in, what of it? Consider this the internet equivalent of standing on the pavement on Potteric Carr Road hawking flimsy red and white checked flags froma  suitcase atop of a trestle table. OK, perhaps I’ve taken the analogy too far, as I am actually bringing you something good, but I’ll not deny that this special edition of Viva Video is only here because of the Carling Cup Fever that is spreading (ever so slowly) across Doncaster.

Yep, Rovers are hosting Premier League pace-setters Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup second round tomorrow, and in a bid to get you in the mood I bring you a gift of video. I had a glorious dream last night that this match was actually played out at Belle Vue, and it was glorious because that’s where Rovers’ cup games belong.

Sure we ran Villa close last season, and we disposed of Southend and Crewe emphatically, and epically respectively in the play-offs and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. But, the Keepmoat isn’t where cup triumphs happen. Instead they occur on dark nights on packed terraces backed by a heavy red and white mist of chanting, fried onions and culture shock. Can it all of been just four years ago that this happened?

  1. Great memories!

That number 14 looks a good finisher, wonder what he’s doing now?

  2. Donny have had some great cup nights and this should be no exception. However, the competition is still rather beleaguered with West Ham and Millwall fans and Swansea City’s discipline providing lowlights from last night. A potential solution could be to invite Scottish clubs to take part.

  3. To be fair, the 2005 Cup run aside we’ve been bloody awful in the Cups in my lifetime. I think the competition was ‘beleaguered’ before last night’s games but I’m not sure what bringing in the Scotish sides would do… the Anglo-Scottish Cup was even more of a non-entity
