Rovers make the short trip across South Yorkshire on Saturday for their latest friendly fixture against near neighbours Rotherham United. Of course since the Millers now play their home games a little further afield at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium as a result of muh upheavel at the club in recent years. Rotherham’s plight and dip into administration which saw them begin last season -17 points has meant that what was Doncaster’s fiercest rivalry a decade ago has fizzled out with a mutual understanding of what its like when your club faces the football abyss.
But should football rivalries really falter in troubling times. Of course no-one likes to see a near neighbour in trouble, but surely in the same way that you would never support another club, can you really turn your back on hating another? And I mean this mutually, I’d like to hope that the Millers resent having to train at the Keepmoat and are subsequently plotting to bring down the stadium from within. Probably not. But perhaps we here at Viva Rovers can restore this mutual dislike to what it once was with the aid of a simple video clip. Here Doncaster’s Jeremy Clarkson taks an opportunity to get one over on nextdoor… if the content doesn’t get you seething there’s a chance just seeing Clarkson will build up some anger anyway.
