R’sonists Blaze a Path to Leeds

After ten years you would think I had exhausted the fire based puns but they still keep coming. Rovers’ internet supporters football team the Donny R’sonists are gearing up for their biggest  event of the year as they get set to take part in this weekend’s annual WorldNET tournament in Leeds. It is the R’sonists’ twelfth consecutive appearance at the tournament having been initially formed to take part at the event in 1998.

The annual WorldNET event, run by the IFA (Internet Football Association), sees supporters’ teams from across the country descend on Boddington Hall in Headingley for a two day football tournament.  On Saturday teams battle it out in the Group stages, each playing three eleven-a-side thirty minute matches and on Sunday the tournament moves into the knock-out phases. Those who finish in the top two places in each group go into the Cup, those finishing in the bottom two places go into the Plate competition guaranteeing all sides two days of competition. The R’sonists are just one of 64 teams in the main competition with a further sixteen teams taking part in a Veterans (over 30s) competition.

The R’sonists will be taking a nineteen man squad to West Yorkshire for the event and will line-up in Group 12 of the competition against fans teams representing  Queens Park Rangers, Dunfermline and St Johnstone. The match against Queens Park Rangers is a repeat of the 2006 Plate Final, which a shattered R’sonists side sadly lost 2-1.

The R’sonists warmed up for the tournament with a couple of friendly fixtures at Balby Carr Sports College. A fortnight ago the R’sonists went down to near neighbours Rotherham’s Internet Millers. Despite a brace from Andy Harriman and one from new addition Callum Smith the R’sonists lost 5-3. However they had better luck on Sunday in their final warm-up game with a 3-1 win over Whitby Wanderers for a final boost before the competition.

Keep an eye on our twitter feed over the course of the weekend for updates on the R’sonists progress, and you can also read a report of the weekend on this site on Monday.
