More proof that Rovers have made it to the big time, the club have been invited to enter a team into the Football Masters tournament. Doncaster will feature in the Yorkshire Masters held at Sheffield Arean later this month up against veteran outfits representing Barnsley, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Hull City. The winners of the tournament will go on to the Masters Grand Final which we assume is some kind of snooker tournament.
The tournament is for former players aged 35 years and over, although Rovers side features two of the current coaching staff goalkeeper coach Lee Butler, who represented Rovers on a non-contract basis in 2002 and assistant manager Richard O’Kelly who, er, hasn’t played for Rovers. Maybe we’re supposed to keep that quiet.
The rest of the particularly sturdy looking squad, with their time at Rovers in brackets, are as follows; Gary Brabin (1994-96), John Doolan (2003-05), Leo Fortune-West (2003-06), Steve Gaughan (1988-90), Graeme Jones (1993-96), Chris Swailes (1993-95), Russ Wilcox (1993-95).
The tournament is being screened by the usual bastards so if you want to watch we suggest you get off the sofa and go to the Arena.
Tickets are still available and are priced at £15 for adults and £10 for concessions and £20 if you want to sit ‘at the halfway line’ according to the Sheffield Arena website.
