Viva Video XXX

Its not x-rated, its just episode thirty of our media based weekly feature. This week’s video offering is something of a detachment from our usual fare. Yes it remains a trip down memory lane, and yes it is also, if a little tenuously, Rovers related. However, there is no football action to be seen in the next few minutes. Still, it is the close season so I suppose that too is only fitting.

Anyway, over on the new look website of the Viking Supporters Co-operative the old debate about Rovers related music has reared its head again, given more chances than a backbench MP filling in a claim form. The quest this time is for a club anthem and as ever the debate has ranged from the atmospheric, to the arguably traditional to the just a bloody good tune. Here at Viva Rovers we’re joining the debate and championing our own selection.

As with anyone who has watched their club for a significant period of their life there are a number of songs which I associate with the Rovers. Thanks to our recent history as a club those memories are pretty much uniformly good too. For example, by musical association the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final is the Fratellis, the Division Three title is the Zutons and for me the Conference Play Off Final is the White Stripes.

However there is only one song I know which I associate not just with Doncaster Rovers, but only with Doncaster Rovers. The first time I heard the now familiar hook of this song was on the Pop Stand terrace at Belle Vue where it was not played through the tannoy system, but instead sung by thos populating the concrete steps. It was catchy and it was probably a year before I knew what the actual song was. Still, my formative Belle Vue years, particularly in moments of triumph or glory, or just general enjoyment were spent singing the refrain of this track. And therefore to me, this is the muscial embodiment of my club.

So with that championing from me, I implore you to get behind our song selection; Angel is a Centrefold by the J. Geils Band. Go on, you know you want to.
