If you mention Coventry City to anyone in their mid to late twenties and they’ll inevitably mention one of two things; either Keith Houchen’s diving header in the 1987 FA Cup final, or the Sky Blues’ humbling by non-league Sutton in the same competition two years later. It was tempting to revisit one of those occasions in this section, but alas we’ve spared you to go even further back.

Mention Coventry City to anyone in their forties and you will get a different response of just two words; Willie Carr. Early in the 1970-71 season Coventry were facing Everton at Highfield Road when they won a free-kick just outside the penalty area. Barry Davies suggested the situation was ‘on for a quick one’, however the Sky Blues had been working on something different.

Willie Carr flicked up the ball with what became known as a ‘Donkey kick’ and Ernie Hunt did the rest, a superb volley into the far corner of the goal. Unsurprisingly the FA moved quick to halt such flagrant entertainment, and the technique was outlawed. Thankfully though the Match of the Day cameras were on hand to capture the original moment in all it’s glory. Everton’s ‘mustard’ away kit, a curious lack of advertising boards, the disabled cars parked pitchside, its all there. Cue Barry Davies…
