As identified on this very website both before and after Saturday’s league win over Ipswich, Rovers always seem to do well on live television. From the Conference to the present day Doncaster have suffered just four defeats in twenty-one matches on the box, and the last of those was on penalties… to Arsenal… in the Carling Cup quarter final.
S*y’s odd decision to broadcast non-league football at the turn of the Millennium brought the club welcome media exposure, in fact aside from the Carling Cup run of 2005, and the recent play-off joy, it was when in the Conference that Rovers were most often thrust into the nation’s living rooms. In 2002-2003 Rovers had a total of seven matches screened on S*y, bookended by wins over Dagenham & Redbridge
The first of those wins came on a Sun drenched September Saturday lunchtime at Belle Vue. Dagenham, having finished second the previous season were amongst the favourites for promotion, but were enduring a poor start to the season, so much so that they brought little over 50 fans to Belle Vue that day… I remember because we counted them at half-time.
Its hard to believe watching this clip that is only just over six years ago since it took place. For instance, watching it back now it took me some time to decipher what exactly that garbled musical noise was soon after each Rovers goal was scored. Then I remembered… it was me… playing Angel is a Centrefold on a trumpet at the back of the Pop Side. Some things, are perhaps best left in the past. Ooh its a corner!
