Its been a tough week on Rovers Mountain. Doncaster remain at the foot of the Championship table; little Darren looks like he’s about to flee the nest whilst Grandpa John and Uncle Sean are settling in for what looks set to be a harsh winter. So ahead of what threatens to be a frustratingly fruitless trip to Hillsborough let us lose ourselves once again in nostalgia. Yes, this clip features a winning goal for our upcoming opponents, and quite a goal at that, but its beauty is as much audible as it is visual.
When you think of iconic football commentary you think of Wolstenholme’s “They think its all over…”, of Coleman’s “Goals pay the rent”, of Motson’s “Tigana… Platini… Goal” or even of Davies’ “Interesting… very interesting”. With that in mind this clip’s opening line, “Shutt says I’ll tek it me self”, may not be in the commentary canon, but it is a great line in it’s own right.
You would think that from this high point the clip could only go downhill, but thanks to a mispelt caption, a replay that is very much as it suggests, and a blatant embracing of regional accent it maintains a surprisingly high comic quota. Tony Carnell, take a bow and then take it away
