The welcome return to form of Stephen Roberts has not gone unnoticed by Rovers’ fans in recent weeks, although sadly it seems it has slipped under the radar of John Toshack. The Wales manager today announced his squad for next month’s international friendly with Norway next month and vivarovers.net were mightily disappointed not to see Stephen Roberts name on the squad list. Only the football league’s three Welsh based clubs can claim to have more eligible Welsh players on their books than Rovers and yet, Doncaster remains unrepresented in Toshack’s latest squad.
Of Rovers’ five eligible players; Stephen Roberts, Gareth Roberts, Jason Price, Brian Stock and Lewis Guy it was Stephen Roberts who had arguably the best case for a call-up to a national team lacking in central defensive strength in depth. Roberts had been a key factor in Rovers recent rise up the table and his strong performances in a side playing well surely merited a place in the national squad. Instead John Toshack has kept faith with Wrexham’s Steve Evans despite the Dragon’s position at the foot of League Two.
In total Toshack’s latest squad featured four players currently playing in League One; Neal Eardley and Craig Davies of Oldham, Arron Davies of Forest and Gillingham’s Andrew Crofts. Two League Two defenders also got the nod Craig Morgan of Peterborough United and the aforementioned Steve Evans of Wrexham.
