Doncaster Rovers Belles remain in ninth place in the FA Tesco Womens Premier League after a narrow defeat at the hands of second placed Blackburn. The Belles went behind early on in the match held at Clitheroe FC’s Shawbridge ground as Karen Hanson gave Rovers a sixth minute lead. The Blackburn forward getting beyond the Belles back-line before rounding keeper Caroline Collie to finish.
Despite this early set-back the Belles had turned things around and led the match at half-time. Precious Hamilton headed home a Carla Cantrell corner to level the scores, and then after half an hour Liz Hansen gave Doncaster the lead as she headed home Natasha Hughes’ cross at the near post. Cantrell almost increased the Belles’ lead, but was crucially denied by a good save from the Blackburn keeper Payne.
That save proved vital for the home side and on the hour mark they levelled the match once again as Katie Anderton broke clear and finished past Collie. And nine minutes later the scores had been reversed as Nicola Twohig headed home a right wing corner. Blackburn held onto their advantage to leave the Belles still frustratingly close to the drop zone.
