Whilst the men’s squad spent FA Cup third round day on the sofa there was at least some knock-out joy as Doncaster Rovers Belles avoided a potential banana skin to progress to the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup. The Belles travelled to face South West Combination side Swindon at the County Ground and overcame the underdogs with a 5-0 win. Determined not to be on the wrong end of an upset the Belles took the lead through a Vicky Exley free-kick after three minutes.
After eighteen minutes the Belles doubled their lead as Emily Heckler headed home a Natasha Hughes cross, and within three minutes it was 3-0 as Precious Hamilton found space on the edge of the Town box and placed the ball into the top corner of the net. The Belles grabbed a fourth after half an hour as Heckler struck from twenty yards for her second of the match.
In the second half the home side got a better grip of the Belles and there were chances for both sides as Exley hit the bar for the Belles and Michelle Rich did likewise for Swindon. As the home side tired the Belles eventually added a fifth goal in injury time as Carla Cantrell exchanged a one two with Jessica Hunt before sliding the ball under the Town keeper for Doncaster’s fifth and final goal.
