Doncaster Rovers Belles continued their recent surge up the table with a 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Keepmoat Stadium Pitch 2. Of late the Belles have shown that they are more than a match for the leading clubs in the FA Women’s Premier League and that continued today as victory over leaders Bristol and a draw with second place Watford was followed up with a deserved win over fourth place Blackburn.
Carla Cantrell had already tested the visiting keeper once before she grabbed the first goal of the game half an hour in. The Rovers forward was on hand to convert a cross from Veronica Cantoro to put the Belles in front. Before the break the Belles had doubled their lead as leading scorer Liz Hansen raced on to a through ball from Claire Utley and held off the Blackburn defence to roll the ball home.
Rovers made the match secure with quarter of an hour to go as Carla Cantrell got her second of the game, finishing from Hansen’s pass. As the game wore on both Precious Hamilton and Frankie Waller had chances to increase the margin of victory, but its the points that matter most for the Belles as they continue to distance themselves from the relegation zone.
