Rovers’ Ben Smith has joined Lincoln City on an emergency loan. The move comes just two days after Smith had made his first full appearance of the season for Rovers in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie at Grimsby on Tuesday night. The former Newcastle United trainee was a regular in the Rovers goal in the middle of last season, but the loan and then subsequent permenent signing of Neil Sullivan has left Smith kicking his heels on the subs bench or the in the stands for much of the last nine months.
It is hoped the loan move will give Smith a much needed taste of regualr football, as he goes straight into the Imps squad ahead of their match with Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow. However, as positive as the move is for Smith and Lincoln, it does leave the worrying question for Rovers fans… what if Sullivan gets injured? as goalkeeping coach Barry Richardson is now the only other ‘keeper at the club.
